Fast Food Dangers

Many people in our western society live a fast food lifestyle. This food is readily available, cheap and prepared fast for people who are always on the go. This food is the main source of many health related problems for many reasons.

Lack Of Nutrients

Our bodies need the essential vitamins and minerals from food to keep us healthy. These vitamins and minerals are lacking in many fast food items. While french fries are made from potatoes and you do get some nutrition from the potato they are also fried in oil and covered in salt. A typical fast food meal of a burger, french fries, and soda provides some nutrition but too much fat, salt, sugar and calories. Since the body cannot use a lot of the substances found in this meal it stores the excess calories as fat. If you consume meals like this on a daily basis you will gain weight. Your body becomes starved for nutrients and begins to store every calorie consumed as fat. If these meals are consumed occasionally then there isn't much of a problem. You can go back to healthy eating the next day and still enjoy it as a treat for yourself.

Serving Sizes/Advertising

Often fast food meals are extremely large and words such as jumbo, large, and super-sized are used to describe these meals and junk food products we buy. We think in our minds that we are getting more value for our money. This is not the case because all you are getting is more sugar, salt, fa
t, and calories. These large servings contribute to the decline of health and lead to chronic diseases. In the media this food is made to look attractive and appealing. Often we see models or other attractive individuals eating and consuming this food. New junk food products are marketed to young people with fancy advertisements to get them to buy the food product.

Health Problems

Junk food is one of the main contributors to health problems. The high levels of sugar, salt, calories and additives all promote health issues. High salt intake can raise blood pressure levels. Over consumption of sugar can lead to diabetes. The animal fat and oil found in these products clogs the arteries and leads to heart disease. Additives and chemicals in the food products accumulate in the body and may cause cancer in some individuals. Many of these food products contain little to no fiber which puts stress on the intestines and causes constipation. The end result of over consumption of fast food is weight gain or obesity and eventually chronic disease.

Fast food is a large contributor to health problems. The salt, sugar, fat and excess calories contained in this food cause stress on the body and contribute to the development of disease. Our bodies need vitamins, minerals and fiber to function properly. These elements are not present in the quantities necessary for good health in fast food. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts and seeds will promote better health and lessen the risks of developing chronic diseases.
