If you really want to eat healthy, you also need to give your snacks a couple of thoughts, not only your main meals. In fact, snacking can be highly beneficial for your health, even and especially when you want to lose weight. But we often choose the wrong foods when we pick our snack. If done right, snacks can carry many valuable benefits.

Healthy Snacks - Why They Are Important For A Healthy Diet And How To Get Their Maximum Benefits
Snacks are often said to be unnecessary, all these things we eat in between because we "just feel like". But in fact, they are much more important for a healthy and balanced nutrition than you could imagine. Snacking, if done right and proper, can be a very effective tool in helping you to control your eating and even help you to lose weight. Now, let's take a closer look at the secrets of snacking:

Common snacking habits cause problems

Our problem is that we often make unwise choices when picking our snacks. We tend to grab convenient, high-calorie foods like chocolate bars, donuts or chips. It's okay to have these every now and then, but if they are every single snack you eat, you consume them way too frequently and they may well make you pick up weight.

Why then are snacks important?

Snacking is actually a very clever and helpful eating habit. We use to have three main meals a day but we often get a bit hungry in between, especially if we work hard and use lots of energy. If you then wait until the next mealtime comes along, you will be so hungry that you wolf down your food and end up eating much more than you would need, simply because you are so hungry that you lose control. But when you have a little snack as soon as the first hunger hits you, you will easily survive till supper and be happy with your normal amount of food. And even if you add the snack, you will still have eaten less all in total than with that severe overeating at mealtimes.

6 tips how you can get all the benefits snacks can offer

The secret to make snacks work for you is to make clever choices – meaning healthy choices. Apply the same rules like for planning your main meals in a healthy diet approach:

  • Prefer foods packed with nutrients, not with calories, like fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
  • Avoid fatty and sugary foods like chips and biscuits.
  • Reduce calories by choosing low-fat products (milk, yoghurt) and natural sweeteners (e.g. honey) or naturally sweet foods like fruit that don't need added sugar.
  • Have some water or low-calorie drink with your snack. It will fill you without adding many calories.
  • Keep the portion size small. Remember: It's a snack, not a meal. Just a little something to settle your stomach and keep you going.
  • Don't eat when you are actually bored not hungry. This will just make you pick up weight. If you are hungry you've got a reason to eat. If you are bored, go do something!
These thoughts should have given you an idea how to change your snacking habits for better. If you snack right and make healthy choices, than you will never have to feel bad when having a snack, because you know you are doing something good for your health: controlling your appetite and eating healthy food, boosting your body with energy and nutrients.
