Some ADHD facts

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD is a developmental disorder that shows up during the early childhood. Children with ADHD may exhibit extreme activity (hyperactivity), do things without thinking (impulsivity) and are not able to stay focussed for a long period (Inattention).

ADHD, which was previously considered a neurological disorder, is known to affect millions of children and boys are more likely to be affected than the girls. Sometimes, ADHD symptoms may also continue into teenage and adulthood, which can lead to many complications.

Though millions of children are affected, the real cause of ADHD is still not known. Some attribute it to genes and some say it is just related to the brain.

Based on primary symptoms, three types of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are known. The hyperactive impulsive ADHD type is a condition in which the children are hyperactive, restless and constantly engage in doing something. These children act spontaneously and the other signs noticeable in them are fidgeting, difficulty remaining seated, difficulty playing quietly, excessive talking and problem with interrupting or intruding.

Children who are "dreamers" come under the inattentive ADHD type. These children are unable to concentrate on one thing and often get bored after some time. They do not complete a task or learn anything new. These children often make careless errors in schoolwork, have difficulty in following instructions and forget things.

Then there is the combined ADHP type, where chil
dren display symptoms of both the hyperactive and inattentive ADHD types.

Well, it is hard to diagnose ADHD as the symptoms vary from one child to another. No physical tests can determine whether your child has ADHD but you can trace ADHD in your child only if you watch him closely. Once you come across any of the earlier mentioned symptoms, do not just assume that your child has ADHD. Only a paediatrician, child specialist, psychiatrist or a qualified mental health professional can determine whether your child has ADHD or not.

Once your child is diagnosed with ADHD, there is nothing to worry as several treatments and therapies are now available. A combination of drugs, behavioural therapy and parenting helps in managing ADHD. Normally, the doctors prescribe Stimulants, Non- stimulants and Antidepressants for ADHD. But these drugs may come with many side effects. Well, it is always better to go for natural herbal drugs, which does not come with side effects.

Apart from the medication, behaviour and cognitive therapy helps a great deal to overcome ADHD in your child. Through these therapies, your child will learn how to control himself, how to think clearly and hoe to respond to situations.

Parenting is another aspect that helps a great deal in managing ADHD. But as a parent, you may not be able to handle all alone the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in your child. You need good support from your family and friends. The children really need love and help from others.

If ADHD is not recognised and treated, it can lead to several complications like frustration, forgotten dreams, low self esteem and failed relationships.
